Matt Beeuwsaert, former CAL grad and professional basketball player of the
European leagues, has created a collection of Hoop Fool comic strips to
teach young athletes the importance of hard work, team play, and self
discipline in a humoristic way. Zac Ryan, his goggle-eyed, cocky young
protagonist lacks all the mental skills needed to succeed, not only on the
playing field, but also in life.
Matt was a McDonald's All-American when he graduated from Mater Dei H.S. in
California back in 1984. But his career was not without its struggles:
"I had huge confidence problems from my senior year all the way through
college. I put so much pressure on myself to be this perfect player that I
never allowed myself the chance to make a mistake. This turned into a fear
of failure, and it wasn't until after college that I met someone who helped
me to recognize that failure is a part of sports, and life."
"I WISH I had had this type of curriculum when I was going through high
school. It would have definitely helped me recognize that my thoughts were
just as important as how I prepared myself physically. That's what attracts
me to GetPsychedSports.org; it prepares kids mentally to give their best, and
allows the coach and players to work TOGETHER in building for the future"
